The first Aghamore Celtic Festival took place in September 1998 and was a
huge success. Initially planned as a one day event to coincide with National
Heritage Day, Sunday 5th September, it became a full weekend of excitement when
several ideas were merged. The principal activity of the weekend was a battle
re-enactment and living history display focusssing on the Norman period. This
was organized by Alan Montague of the MacTague Rua Historical Reenactment and
Drama Group, which has branches in Wicklow, Cork and Aghamore.
The Norman/Gaelic battle took place on a beautiful
site, adjacent to the old
church, and overlooking the castle of Raith in the valley. The living history
event was held in the village, at the rear of William Waldron's old public
house which was open for the first time since 1961.
